4.4: My vagina rent is overdue

They really played out marriage this episode, didn’t they? Don’s marriage is in tatters. Ken is getting married (don’t tell Sal). Lane’s marriage has fallen apart. Peggy wants to get married. Pete is leveraging his marriage. And Freddie is angling his entire campaign around the idea that Pond’s will help you get married. Oh, and DID YOU GET ANY PEARS?

It’s interesting that in an episode so focused on marriage we didn’t see Betty once. I’m sure that was intentional.

I can definitely relate to Don this episode. He was so stupid to sleep with his secretary and then was arrogant enough to try and just pretend like it didn’t happen — all to have the whole thing blow up in his face. Some similarity with Pete too — how he talked shit about Ken behind his back, which then blew up in his face. Karma is starting to even everyone out in the office. Who’s on deck? Lee Garner Jr?

Allison threw that globe at Don after he told her to write her own recommendation. I know it was the last straw but it seems a bit excessive. In fairness, I’ve done the exact same thing and have had to write my own recommendation before.” Ive escaped each time unscathed.

So is Joyce a lesbian? Is that Peggy’s next frontier? Or is she just an empowered woman? Bobbie Barrett but homely?

This episode made me miss New York. At the party they ask Peggy what she’s writing. “I’m a copywriter. That IS writing.” Yeah, but you’re not working on anything else? If you’re on time, you’re late. If you’re early, you’re on time. It’s a dog-eat-dog world and I don’t know if Peggy is ready yet. Allison obviously isn’t.

This episode laid it on pretty thick, I thought. Particularly: ”$1000 if it’s a boy, $500 if it’s a girl.”“Some cyst in her uterus – or something.”

Best visual gags of the episode:
- Peggy poking her head up over the wall into Don’s office- Burt Cooper sitting in reception with his socks off eating an apple
- Pete shrugging after his father in law calls him a son of a bitch

Best Pete Being an Asshole Moment:
- “Everytime you jump to conclusions I respect you less” -to his father in law

Random Observations:
- When Ken, Harry and Pete go out to lunch, they go to Jim Downey’s Steakhouse. When Harry gets up to answer the phone he tells them to order him a Ceasar salad, no dressing.
- This was the first time I noticed Faye’s Brooklyn accent.
- Anyone see the bag of Wise potato chips Freddie Rumson was eating? Fantastic design.
- Allison’s shoes made an awful lot of noise as she ran down the hall
